I should get a new phone

Q: Can you create a texture of a leaf using a terrible phone camera?
A: Maybe? Let's do a test real quick

So, armed with my trusty (read: shitty) phone camera, I ventured outside to collect some leaves. Pressed them flat in a book and then snapped some pics with as low noise as possible on this thing - no overthinking this, “fail fast” and what not.

Chop ‘em up, stick ‘em in a stew, make a collage and on to Designer.

Eyeballing the maps, basic image manipulations here - no rhyme or reason; if it looks good then it’s good.

But wait.. there’s more!

What is this beautiful little thing? Here’s what the team at Substance has to say:

This node attempts to remove all-lighting information from a set of input photographs/scans that were taken under different lighting angles

Another janky setup to the rescue!

Janky shots; missed an angle; not going back for seconds 😂

Pretty impressive results, especially given the terrible and incomplete input I’ve given it. Much better than Sampler’s Delight node.

Pushing this a little further by making a disease filter. Probably a bad idea given the kind of maps I can extract from those kinds of images, but hey, let’s see what happens.

Did you know that Substance Designer has a python API you can use to export multiple frames of your material? I didn’t. Good thing too, cause I would’ve probably tried to use the buggy .sbsar plugin to run the animated texture in Blender otherwise.
